Call for Submissions: Epidemic Urbanism Initiative Design Competition

The Epidemic Urbanism Initiative (EUI) issued a call for submissions to the 2023 EUI Design Competition, with the theme of Adaptive Reuse: Design Transformations for Community Healthcare. 

Design interventions into pre-existing sites play a critical role in global healthcare. The 2023 Epidemic Urbanism Initiative Design Competition will focus on adaptive reuse, inviting submissions that consider how pre-existing vacant, underused, or currently used sites, structures, and spaces can be transformed into healthcare settings with thoughtful, sustainable design interventions.

Upcoming key dates:

  • Deadline for inquiries: April 30, 2023
  • Deadline for submissions: May 30, 2023

Event: Community Planning Studio Presentation on Dec. 8 to Showcase Restorative Justice Planning Scenarios for Lakeland

You’re invited! Graduate students from the Fall 2022 Urban Studies and Planning Studio at the University of Maryland, College Park will share their Scenario Planning Presentations for Lakeland, Md. in the Architecture Building Auditorium on December 8. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m., and the presentations will begin at 7 p.m.

After working in concert with the community this semester, students will present their final recommendations and scenario plans for potential paths toward restorative justice for the Lakeland Community.

Free parking is available in Lot 1B for those who plan to attend in person.

Dr. Bierbaum on the community impact of proposed school closure in Baltimore

This week, Dr. Ariel Bierbaum was interviewed by WYPR about a proposed school closure in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Bierbaum’s research focuses on the impact of school closures and the importance of schools being critical social and political spaces in addition to places of learning. “People experience the closure as one of the latest harms, and acts of disrespect, that they have experienced at the hands of the public sector for generations,” she said.
